The NEED.

Childhood inactivity and obesity is at an all-time high and affects 1 of every 6 kids in the United States reports Journal of School Health. More than 30 percent of children are obese or overweight. This is triple from 1980. Only 8 percent of elementary school students and 6 percent of middle school and high school students have daily PE at school and today budget cuts have minimized or eliminated P.E. altogether.

Realizing physical activity has a significant impact of the health status of our kids and our community, The 100 Mile Club has created a simple, innovative, sustainable answer to the current health crisis in our youth: daily physical activity in a nonthreatening, supportive, inclusive environment. Our concept is simple and easy to implement. We put a new creative spin on the simple act of walking or running by creating an incentive program that adds excitement while teaching children how to become responsible and accountable for their own success.

The 100 Mile Club serves all kids, ages preschool through high school. We serve youth in all regions: urban, suburban, and rural. We serve all populations: privileged and at-risk. We serve all abilities: from the student who discovers running as a new talent, to the child who physically struggles to put one foot in front of the other. The 100 Mile Club transcends race, gender, ability, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle. We serve and inspire all kids to run and to be the very best they can be. We want to help prevent obesity in children by making fitness opportunities available in schools and empowering kids to achieve a healthy lifestyle they can maintain.

Exercise helps to maintain a healthy weight, yet studies show most children do not get enough exercise at home or in school. The financial strain of our economy has parents working harder with less time to spend with their children doing physical activities.

The 100 Mile Club® addresses the issue of childhood obesity and inactivity using a safe, fun and consistent program that can be modified to fit the needs of all children. The program can be tailored for use before school, during or after school. Evidence supports participation in physical activities can reduce self-destructive behavior, negative social activity, crime, racism, isolation, loneliness and alienation in children and youth as well as reducing the probability of obesity. "Physical fitness is an intrinsic part of the educational process, not something to be sidelined or avoided," said Dr. Robert K. Ross, president and CEO of the California Endowment."

Statewide physical fitness test scores in participating schools are consistently improving. The 100 Mile Club® is more than just a physical fitness program. We improve the quality of life for kids and their entire family. We provide these at risk children with hope, camaraderie and the knowledge that they can be successful in school and beyond.

With the ultimate goal of running or walking 100 miles in a school year, we hope to change the way kids feel about fitness, their bodies and their health. It does not matter where they are physically, they can reach any goal they set.

The 100 Mile Club® is successfully winning the battle on childhood obesity and inactivity one child, one school, one community at a time.
